It also denotes a path carved through the snow, or the trace left by a wave upon the ocean floor.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eChalaa took shape in the heart of the Cévennes, within a ten-meter-high circular space—a former wine vat with a volume of 283 cubic meters—where the reverberation can last as long as thirty seconds.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eA fundamental principle of Amelia Tabeï’s music is that there is never any overdubbing during the mixing process. The complex texture of her music arises from direct, \"vertical\" performance and the transformation of the instruments themselves: \"prepared\" alto and baritone saxophones are combined with unconventional, improvised instrument-building—such as mouthpieces repurposed for a bass tuba, flute headjoints attached to a baritone saxophone or transverse flute, and the addition of various percussion elements and microphones. No longer confined to a single register, these instruments generate powerful, orchestral entanglements and the shimmering of tiny sonic planets. Rhythms, harmonics, and melodies collide in simultaneous interplay, shifting into an electric, telluric, and experimental substance characterized by abrasive, hypnotic textures.
